Meet Ruth

If you were to ask any employer what traits are found in their most valuable staff-members, you would likely hear words like "loyal," "hardworking," "passionate" and "dedicated." It's certain that the steadfast devotion shown by Ruth Thatcher, Guelph General volunteer, has many believing she is on the payroll!

Ruth is GGH's longest serving volunteer. She began her decades-long journey of volunteer work in 1945, when she was in high school. At that time, the Hospital was on the site where 73 Delhi Street is today. After some time off, Ruth went back to volunteering in 1965, by which time the 'new' hospital had been built on its current site. Beginning her work as library cart volunteer, longer-stay patients appreciated the familiar face and warm smile Ruth provided along with their books. Next, Ruth delivered flowers, brightening many a patient's day. She even went back to water them after a few days! On special occasions, the sick received her handmade "tray favours."

Ruth has seen many changes in volunteer services. She was was convenor of the Candy Stripers in the 1970s, when these young volunteers wore pink and white aprons. She fondly recalls the years she helped to organize hospital "Tea Parties," where volunteers outfitted in sunny yellow smocks cheerily served guests from the community, all dressed in their finest, including hats! Small cakes and fancy sandwiches were enjoyed, with tea poured by the Chairman of the Board's wife.

Ruth has played a role in fundraising as well. She served as the Volunteer Association representative on the Foundation Board of Directors for nine years, and has organized events including Luncheon Card Parties (the most recent happening just last month - a sell out with 160 players) and Art Shows. While many of her ongoing contributions require work outside the General, Ruth's presence is still felt in the building. Every other Thursday afternoon, Ruth can be found working in the gift shop, The Courtyard Boutique, eager to offer her assistance to those seeking a pick-me-up for an ill loved one.

Ruth was awarded a Life Membership to the Volunteer Association in 1987, and shows no signs of slowing her efforts. "With good health I will continue to work for Guelph General Hospital as long as I am able," she says. Whatever Ruth's future volunteerism looks like, one can be certain that she will continue to support the General with as much love and commitment as when she first began.
